Job Responsibilities & Qualifications:


To perform general and specialized cleaning tasks within the Cherokee Indian Hospital to maintain established sanitation standards (state and federal), tribal, Joint Commission and OSHA guidelines. 


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Obtain AHE Certified Healthcare Environmental Service Technician (CHEST) certification and keep current while employed at CIHA
  • Six months cleaning experience from a healthcare facility preferred

  • Performs daily routine cleaning tasks within assigned areas of the facility: patient rooms, treatment rooms, administrative and service departments, restrooms and other internal hospital areas in a timely manner and according to established techniques and procedures
  • Maintains sanitary cleanliness and attractive condition of assigned area and care of equipment
  • Keeps department supervisor informed of activity, supply par level and equipment status
  • Completes work assignments, verbal and written
  • Submits to supervisor in a timely and effective manner any incomplete work, problems and issues to ensure proper documentation and resolution
  • Maintains a neat and orderly service cart with supplies and restocks as needed
  • Restocks cart and supply shelf at the end of shift
  • Collects and bags soiled linen as needed and takes soiled linen bags to proper area for pick up
  • Stocks patient linen supply to ensure levels are met and maintained
  • Responds in a timely matter to request for additional linens
  • Responds to special requests for EVS services
  • Takes initiative to complete needed EVS services and uses time wisely to ensure that all tasks are completed in order or priority of patient needs
  • Completes record of work and quality assurance checklist
  • Launders and dries mop and buffer pads daily
  • Cleans and performs simple upkeep to equipment which should not be damaged, if handled properly
  • Performs assigned project work, including but not limited to wall cleaning, stairwell and elevator cleaning, curtain removal/re-hanging, response to service calls, etc
  • Moves and rearranges furniture as requested
  • Follows established guidelines and OSHA protocol in the disposal of biohazard waste
  • Performs all duties according to established safety guidelines and tribal policy
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the requirements, policies and guidelines for EVS procedures of IHS,       Cherokee Indian Hospital and applicable OSHA protocol
  • Must be skilled in the use of mechanical and manual cleaning equipment, such as a buffer, scrubber, vacuum cleaner, mop, broom and laundry equipment
  • Must be familiar with hospital layout
  • Requires the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions
  • Must know all related sanitation guidelines and quality assurance requirements
  • Must know safety procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • Must be able to walk, push, pull, stoop, bend, reach, kneel, twist and grip items
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds
  • Manual dexterity and coordination to operate cleaning equipment
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays
  • Potential contact with diseases and situations in which falls, back strain, electrical shock or minor cuts to fingers and hands may occur
  • Contact with biohazard substances and cleaning solutions where proper handling procedures are required
  • Must following established safety procedures and sanitation guidelines which reduce the risk of injury or disease
  • Maintain a clean and positive image
