Job Responsibilities & Qualifications:
Primary Function:
The employee works under the direction and supervision of the Chief Dental Officer. This position is primarily located at Cherokee Indian Hospital Dental Clinic. There may be some travel required in order to provide services in other locations. Under supervision, the incumbent is responsible for a variety of clinical and administrative duties established by the Chief Dental Officer.  The primary duties will be to perform all basic dental hygiene functions in order to allow the dental team to function as efficiently as possible.  The purpose of this position is to provide lead support to the dental team by performing range clerical, clinical and administrative functions, which will aid the dental team in the performance of their assigned duties.  This position aids the dental team/hygienists to function smoothly and better serve the intended population.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise all dental hygienists who work at CIHA and satellite clinics including five full-time hygienists and other hygienist as hired in the future. 
Monitors and completes quarterly and yearly skills competencies for all hygiene staff.
Performs discipline, training, and motivating dental hygiene staff to be proficient and productive team members.
Assures accurate and timely submission of Dental Hygiene evaluations and other Dental Department reports as required. Completion of 90-day, 6 month and yearly evaluations.
Participates and advises in personnel matters relating to ALL dental staff including: staffing plan, recruitment, and hiring.
Coordinates the day-to-day clinical functions of the dental hygiene team.
Takes the lead in arranging continuing professional education, in-service training, and orientation.
Approves staff time cards as needed.
Arranges schedules and builds staff meetings as needed.
Responsible for the daily scheduling of staff to ensure adequate staff to meet the patient needs.
Performs Dental Hygiene functions, as described in the Dental Hygienist Job Description.
Responsible for working closely with the Business Office as needed to ensure timely collections of claims. 
Works closely with Dental Hygienists to ensure that they and the Dentist are properly coding to maximize net patient service revenue.
Responsible for gathering data needed by the Compliance Officer on the Annual Provider Audit.
Responsible for establishing par levels of supplies needed for hygiene. 
Responsible for repair and replacement of small dental equipment.
Responsible for the development, collection and analysis of customer surveys for hygiene.
Responsible for completing any other responsibilities as requested by management or executive leadership.
Works with the EBCI Children’s Dental Program to ensure CIHA hygiene standards and codes of conduct are met and maintained, and corroborates with their program to ensure both CIHA and CDP missions are achieved.

Education /Experience:
Must be a graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program with a degree in dental hygiene. 
Must have completed the training according to the Dental Laws of North Carolina for Public Health Dental Hygienists Performing Procedures.
Must have experience in planning and implementing dental health programs.
Must possess a current license to practice dental hygiene in North Carolina 
An Associate’s Degree in Business Administration or a health related field is preferred.
A high school diploma or GED is required.
A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a clerical, administrative, or health related field is required. 
Supervisory and or leadership experience is preferred.
Previous experience working in a dental setting is required.
Previous experience working with Dentrix is preferred.
Must possess a valid NC driver’s license.

Job Knowledge:
Knowledge of proper storage of dental equipment.
Knowledge of receiving, routing, and scheduling of patients.
Knowledge of dental terminology in order to accurately communicate with dental staff.
Knowledge of proper storage of supplies and replenishment when necessary.
Assures dental clinic is in a clean and orderly manner.
Knowledge of hazardous materials, infection control and safety guidelines.
Knowledge of Microsoft office suite, billing and coding for dental hygiene services, performance improvement tools, and survey monkey.
Knowledge of the electronic medical record in a dental practice.
Knowledge of the dental hygiene sciences including the principles, practices, and procedures of dental hygiene to conduct and coordinate preventative dental health activities, perform specialized oral hygiene care, and develop instructional material and guidelines for standardizing the delivery of preventative care.
Knowledge of the clinic’s medical and dental services, the characteristics and needs of the patient population, and the resources available in order to develop and carry out the preventative dentistry program.
Skills in planning and presenting dental hygiene lectures, demonstrations, and instruction using knowledge of dental hygiene sciences and practices including effective techniques of motivation and behavior change.
Knowledge of the methods and techniques in developing and disseminating dental health education information to the public.
Demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
Ability to utilize various computer programs, including electronic dental record.
Knowledge of OSHA, CDC, EPA, JCAHO and state regulations in order to insure safety for self and others.

Contact with Others:
Contacts of this position will include patients receiving dental care, departmental employees working in a team, and other hospital employees. Contact with dental vendors will also be necessary when their knowledge or services impact the dental hygienist functions.

Confidential Data:
Must adhere to all tribal guidelines, CIHA and HIPPA policies and procedures for working with confidential data.  An above average degree of discretion is required while handling patient and related medical information. Maintains confidentiality of all administrative, medical, and personnel record, and all other pertinent information that come to his/her attention of knowledge.  Violation of such confidentiality shall be cause for adverse action.

Mental /Visual /Physical Effort:
Job duties can be mentally/emotionally stressful at times.  Ability to effectively deal with stress. The stress involved in treatment of apprehensive or uncooperative patients must also be considered. Close mental concentration and attention to detail are required for most duties. Must have visual acuity, manual dexterity, and the ability to speak and hear. Long periods of sitting, walking, standing, and bending are necessary.  Some moderate-heavy lifting is necessary in patient transport and the management of supply inventories.

Environment:
Work involves exposure to communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, radiation, flying debris, nitrous oxide, fumes, dust, intense ultra-violet light emissions, surface disinfectants, loud and high frequency sound emissions, and caustic and hazardous chemicals. 

Resourcefulness and Initiative:
The incumbent’s resourcefulness and initiative will be welcome to change any method current6ly used in the dental department; however, it is not a requirement.
