Job Responsibilities & Qualifications:
PRIMARY FUNCTION:   
The purpose of this position is to perform radiology and CT examinations.   Radiology Diagnostic technologist must be registered in radiology and able to perform all CT exam.  Fully competent and possess a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of the radiology field.  Supervision will be minimal on day to day activities, conferring with superior on unusual matters.  

Job Description:
Receives patients, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment and makes exposure necessary for the requested procedures.

Independently makes routine radiographic and CT examinations of the head, truck, spine, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injury.  CT exams with and without contrast as needed.

Performs procedures as a team member, with the Radiologist and independently such as IVP’s, Upper GI series, air contrast barium enemas and small bowel follow through.  Sets up the x-ray room for appropriate procedure.  Assures the sterile supplies, local anesthetics, contrast materials, catheters and other required equipment are present and laid out.  Prepares contrast material.  CT exams with and without contrast when necessary.

Schedules patients for examinations, giving them the appropriate instructions.  The technologist will include previous electronic images on patients for radiologist to use for comparison.  

Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to the Radiology Manager adoption of those, which would improve the operation of the radiology department.
 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Registered with the American Registry of Radiology Technologist.  DRT maintains continuing education credits sufficient to maintain registry (24 CE’s/2 years).
 
AA Degree required.

Six months to become proficient in job.


JOB KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices, and techniques including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes, effects of radiation on living organisms, and the effects of x-ray techniques on patients and operator exposure in order to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained.  To recognize when changes of equipment or procedures might result in increased exposure and to adopt methods to prevent such exposure.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, e.g., the locations, appearance and function of various major systems.  Skill in using this knowledge to interpret accurately the examination request and understands the functioning and relationship of the various organs of the system; to select the best x-ray views of particular interest to the doctor; and to identify the organs appearing on the film and the various stages of the examination in order to judge the acceptability of the radiograph/CT for diagnostic use.
Knowledge of basic physics including the concepts of energy, electric power and types of electric circuits, the construction, function and operating limitations of various types of x-ray tubes, and the properties of x-rays in order to understand the operation of x-ray equipment.
Knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques including how to use formulas for determining technical factors, how to control density, contrast and distortion and how to use intensifying screens, buckys, collimator, filters, grids and other accessories to produce radiographs of high diagnostic quality with a minimum of retakes.
Knowledge of CT positions and how to get the accurate images to get the highest quality exam with least amount of exposure.  
Skill in positioning of patients for a number of difficult radiographic examinations in order to obtain a readable image.
Knowledge of first aid practices including emergency cardiac arrest procedures in order to assist patients until a medical or nursing team can arrive.
Knowledge of medical terminology to make sure the reports are typed correctly.

A valid Driving License is required.


COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
The work involves operating of radiology and CT equipment, including independent performance of a variety of routine radiographic examinations and performance of a number of more complex examinations under the direction of a radiologist.  The examinations require coordination of the positioning of the patients and the operation of  equipment.  The technologist occasionally must use basic formula to set up standard operating procedures or to accommodate patients who are substantially more robust or frail that normal.  The employee occasionally revises non-standard positioning and equipment set up to accommodate patients who are suffering from illnesses, deformities or injuries.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Incumbent is supervised by the Supervisory DRT (Diagnostic Radiology Technologist). Technologist. The supervisor provides detailed instructions on new procedures and techniques, and advises on technical problems.  Work is spot checked for diagnostic value and for methods used in conducting the examination.  The Supervisory DRT schedules the day-to-day work of the radiology section.
Textbooks, technical manuals and research paper/journals on radiology are available for additional guidance.  The incumbent must maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field on radiology to recommend new methods, examinations and guidelines for adoption.  Procedures change frequently due to new developments in the field.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCURACY
The purpose of the work is to provide radiographic and CT studies for diagnosis and treatment to patients.  The effect of the incumbent performance of duties directly relates to the correct or incorrect physician diagnosis and treatment. Clear and accurate studies are essential to enable the physician to evaluate and treat for patient’s conditions. 

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS
Personal contacts are with patients, patient’s family, and co-workers in the hospital, Radiologist, and other professional workers. Personal contacts are of the purpose of taking ultrasound studies.  Contacts with co-workers are to exchange information to resolve problems with equipment, procedures and rescheduling patients and to coordinate work with other technologists when working on procedures, which require a team effort.  Contacts with patients are to explain the procedure to be performed, patients who are unfamiliar with ultrasound examinations and to direct patients on how to move to achieve correct positioning.  Some patients are seriously ill, injured or nervous.  This may require the incumbent to provide reassurance and comfort.  Contacts with professionals outside the department are to demonstrate and explain practical problems and procedures in taking radiographic procedures.  Contact with the Radiologist, in addition to receiving instructions, are to coordinate work efforts to resolve problems.  

CONFIDENTIAL DATA
The Privacy Act of 1974 mandates that the incumbent shall maintain complete confidentiality of all administrative, medical and personnel records, and all other pertinent information that comes to his/her attention or knowledge.  The Privacy Act carries both civil and criminal penalties for unlawful disclosure of records.  Violations of such confidentiality shall be cause for adverse action.

MENTAL/ VISUAL/ PHYSICAL
There are long periods of standing, walking, bending and carrying of moderately heavy items such as cassettes, film and containers of film processing chemicals.  Wearing heavy lead aprons is sometimes required.  Considerable physical effort involved in positioning patients who are unable to assist or cooperate heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help from other employees.    

ENVIRONMENT
The work area is appropriately lighted and temperature controlled.  Telephone and intercom system provided for adequate communications.  May be exposed to communicable disease.  Uses OSHA recommandations. May be necessary to work when Administrative leave is granted if patient care would be compromised.
