 Primary Function

The DME Specialist will coordinate Durable Medical Equipment and serve as a patient-care liaison.

 

Job Description

  • Provides excellent customer service skills by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner.
  • Responsible for the set-up and fit of Durable Medical Equipment and supplies for any new/existing patients.
  • Will assist with troubleshooting equipment, fit, and compliance.Will perform basic needs assessments on patients and take appropriate action.Perform follow-up phone calls with established patients and identify those in need of new supplies.
  • Assists auditors, governmental agency employees, vendors, and others with questions and information
  • Compiles data from sources such as contracts, purchase orders, invoices, requisitions, and accounting reports and enters information into the computer to maintain inventory, purchasing, shipping, or other records.
  • Keeps back orders file in an established sequence and releases back orders for issue or shipment as stock becomes available.
  • Compiles stock control records to determine stock supply and the need for replenishment.
  • Prepares requisitions, orders, or other documents for purchasing or requisitioning of new or additional stock items.
  • Talks with customers by phone or in person and receives orders for pick-up, discontinuance, maintenance or changes in service.
  • Fills out order forms, determines coverage for service requested and inserts data into information system.
  • Files and/or creates patient records.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of patients of various ages.
  • Maintains patients’ charts that contain pertinent identification and therapy information.
  • Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning at an optimal level.
  • Orders repairs when needed.
  • Functionally checks and selects ordered medical equipment and supplies
  • Collects accurate patient information to support care, service and treatment operations, which includes demographic, billing, and medical information
  • Participates in traditional and e-learning programs as well as an on-going quality improvement program.
  • Disposes of soiled or contaminated supplies per infection control policies.
  • Cleans and disinfects and maintains equipment in a timely manner.
  • Properly marks and covers cleaned equipment.
  • Documents all cleaning/disinfection work on appropriate forms and keeps all documentation in an orderly manner
  • Routes items to departments.
  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • Demonstrates ability and willingness to adapt to special circumstances, such as, staffing shortages, patient emergencies, fluctuations in census, and disasters.
  • Works effectively with other company employees, managers, and departments.
  • Performs all job functions with Company Mission, Vision, and Goal Statements in mind.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.

     

    Job Knowledge

  • Knowledge of insurance eligibility and billing requirements for Respiratory DME is preferred.
  • The incumbent must possess demonstrated communication skills and knowledge including full verbal and written commands of the English language, ability to prepare reports, and the ability to utilize word processing, spread sheets, presentation graphics software and scheduling packages.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and organize technical and administrative data.
  • Incumbent must possess the ability to adapt and independently make changes in work priorities as situations unfold. Must be able to complete all priority assignments within the time limitations imposed by the Respiratory Therapist. Considerable judgment, personal initiative, and tact must be exercised in the day-to-day operation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public and private officials, contractors, and the general public. The incumbent must have the ability to deal successfully and diplomatically with a wide variety of individuals, groups, vendors, and others; this includes those with a wide variety of cultural, educational, and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Knowledge of Cherokee culture.
  • Ability to take directions and carry out orders effectively with minimal or no supervision.

     

    Education & Requirements

  • Certified DME Specialist credentials must be obtained within 2 years of employment.
  • High School Diploma is required.
  • One year of work-related experience in Durable Medical Equipment is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
