Primary Function

This position is located within the Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority Eye Clinic. The primary function of this position is to provide preservation, maintenance, protection, improvement and enhancement of visual performance. The primary function of this position is to sell optical products and services by assisting customers with purchasing decisions, measuring, adjusting and repairing frames and lenses. Also will be responsible for completing eyewear/contact lens orders, requesting, reviewing and processing insurance and collecting payments for doctor services under the direct supervision of the Eye Clinic Practice Manager.  The position demands a significant degree of personal responsibility to make decisions and to work independently. 


Job Description

  • Interprets the prescriptions for each patient for eyeglasses, contacts or other optical services.
  • Educates patients on products and options available.
  • Accurately takes measurements of facial features, multi-focal heights, pupillary distances, and any other measurements needed to produce high quality eyeglasses or contact lenses for each patient.
  • Orders all products/materials needed accurately and efficiently.
  • Verifies all orders upon arrival.
  • Notifies all patients in a timely fashion of completion.
  • Fits and adjusts end product for individual needs.
  • Keeps accurate records for billing and future reference.
  • Follows all policies of CIHA.
  • Maintains patient files according to program guideline and the Privacy Act of 1974.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients of all ages.
  • The individual must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status.
  • Interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.


Job Knowledge

  • Requires the knowledge to operate a computer, various equipment associated with an eye clinic, and related office equipment. 
  • Requires knowledge of various software packages:  i.e. Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
  • Must have experience in applying various policies and procedures in the performance of assigned duties of assigned duties. 
  • Must be able to maintain specified records, files, and logs of the department.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Requires the ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
  • Valid NCDL required.



  • An Associates Degree in Allied Health in Opticianry preferred or equivalent combination of education or work experience. 
  • Retail Optical Sales Experience of at least 2 years is required for this position.
  • The incumbent for this position should have considerable familiarity in the Eye Care Industry. 
  • This position will require an optician certification within 2 years of hire date. 
  • Affiliations with purchasing groups ad product vendors are desirable. 
  • Three to six months in the job would be necessary to become proficient in most phases of the work.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen in accordance with the Drug, Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse policy.  Background check may also be required.
