Primary Function

The Senior Accountant will have a variety of responsibilities that can often be very complex depending on many issues. They will be responsible for helping in preparation of month and year end journal entries, reconciling account balances, reviewing Staff Accountants journal entries, and preparing monthly and annual financial statements. They will need to be able to complete assigned projects and reporting on a fast timeline.

 

 Description

  • Enters and reviews month end journal entries
  • Reviews financial statements for proper GAAP presentations.
  • Addresses tax issues and helps with the proportion of 1099s.
  • Track and records hospital leases and SIBITAs in accordance with GAAP.
  • Approves general ledger transactions.
  • Gives advice on financial statement transactions.
  • Assists in the preparation of audit workpapers.
  • Assists auditors, grantors, vendors and other with financial information.
  • Assists in compiling documents for cost reports, indirect cost reports.
  • Assists in compiling and analyzing information for budgets.
  • Maintains records for special projects.
  • Maintain all reports, records, files and logs as required.
  • Performs all duties according to established safety guidelines and CIHA policies.
  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor.

 

 

Education/Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting is required.
  • Certified Public Accountant in the state of North Carolina and/or Masters in Business Administration or Accountancy is preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in public accounting.
  • Nine to 12 months would be necessary to become proficient in most phases of the job.

 

Job Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and Federal Funding Regulations and must possess special advanced accounting technical knowledge.
  • Must be skilled in the use of specific software used by the division, computers, calculator, typewriter, copy machine, facsimile, and other related office equipment.
  • Requires the ability to maintain specified records, documents/reports.
  • Must have administrative skills and be able to communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.

Complexity of Duties

Develops new systems to meet accounting and related financial reporting requirements. Constantly evaluates and modifies existing systems to meet operational requirements. Must understand all ramifications and effects of any changes to systems. Must use problem-solving skills and be able to analyze data in performing job duties.

 

 

Supervision Received

Incumbent works under the guidance of the Controller. The ability to plan and work independently is required.

 

 

Responsibility for Accuracy

Deals with exact and precise figures/data. Most errors would be detected within the accounting systems and proofing procedures. This position provides financial data to the CIHA on which operational of financial decisions are based. Undetected errors could range from minor to significant in effect. Responsible for the accuracy of work of subordinates.

 

Contacts with Others

Has frequent contact with Controller, coworkers, CIHA directors, auditors, governmental agency employees, vendors and the general public to exchange or provide information. Tact, decorum and professional etiquette are required in the exchange of information.

 

Confidential Data

Has access to most CIHA financial data, vendors, personnel files, memos and financial standing of affairs. A part of the financial information is public record; however, much is not and should be kept confidential. Must adhere to all CIHA confidentiality policies and procedures.

 

Mental/Visual/Physical

Close concentration and attention to detail are required while performing most duties of the job. Is subject to frequent interruptions, both by phone and in person, which require varied responses with each contact. The duties of this job routinely require standing, walking, and sitting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, seeing, speaking, and hearing. May occasionally move more than 15 pounds.

 

Environment

Works in normal business office environment with occasional visits to program sites while performing job duties. May involve contacts with patients in both well and illness status.
